“On January 14, 2022, we asked the Prime Minister to accept our resignation,” it is stated in a joint statement signed by dissatisfied council members. They decided to leave the commission because their recommendations did not have a sufficient impact on the anti-epidemic measures taken by the government of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecke.

“As a Medical Consul, we have been accused of failing to exert influence on the government. At the same time, we have seen a growing tolerance of denial of COVID-19 and a reduction in the importance of pandemic vaccination, which has been reflected in government or state officials.” written by 13 outgoing members of the council.

Experts added that despite the recommendations, the Polish government did not take sufficient measures during the autumn and also ignored the threat of spreading the new omikron variant. The PAP recalled that the Prime Minister’s Chief Adviser on COVID-19, Andrzej Horban, was not among the outgoing members of the Board who had signed the statement. Poland has recorded 16,047 cases of infection and another 423 deaths in the past 24 hours. There are currently more than 16,000 patients in hospitals. About 1,600 of them need the support of artificial lung ventilation.
