A young migrant died on Friday January 14, following an attempt to cross the Channel with around thirty other exiles who were rescued off Berck (Pas-de-Calais). The victim, in his twenties, would be of Sudanese nationality, announced the Boulogne-sur-Mer prosecutor’s office. An investigation against X was opened for manslaughter.
According to the prosecution, 32 people who attempted the crossing on Friday with the young victim are “safe and sound”, but in a state of“hypothermia”. According to a source close to the investigation, the migrants were on “a semi-rigid canoe”. They may have been trapped by the tide, with some of them found on sandbanks.
This is the first death of a migrant in the Channel since the beginning of the year. The assessment of the maritime prefecture of the Channel and the North Sea for 2021 reports 30 dead and 4 missing. Twenty-seven migrants had lost their lives on November 24 when their boat sank off the coast of Calais, the worst tragedy to have occurred on this migratory route.
