Last week, leading medical officials in Xi’an, the capital of China’s Shenxi Province, had to make public apologies after disturbing photos and videos were posted on social media.

They captured, for example, a woman in her eighth month of pregnancy who was in front of one of the local hospitals she was sitting on a plastic table in a pool of blood. She was refused treatment because her negative covid test narrowly exceeded the 48-hour period.

In addition to this incident, there was a tragic case in another of the hospitals there. A local resident said her father died last week after he did not receive medical care for “pandemic rules” despite suffering from heart disease.

Both hospitals were warned and had to “suspend operations for three months in order to correct (mistakes)”. They will need permission to reopen. The Xi’an Medical Commission said in a statement on Thursday that both hospitals had “failed to meet their lives.”

“This has led to delays in the rescue, diagnosis and treatment of critically ill patients, has attracted widespread public attention and has had a bad impact on society,” the health authorities said. He received the first of these hospitals order to suspend its general manager and dismiss several employees; in the second, they ordered the dismissal of the director and his deputy, as well as the head nurse in the outpatient department.

The city is facing widespread criticism for the way it fights the coronavirus crisis. Many Xi’an residents complain that they do not have access to food and daily necessities because they are not allowed to leave their homes due to lockdown restrictions.

They have confirmed more than 2,000 cases in Xi’an since December 9 – but their numbers have been declining in recent days, with only six newly infected on Thursday.
