Crucial P5 Plus 1TB review: an NVMe SSD that ensures high speed

Present since the beginning of the SSD era, Crucial rarely plays in the overbidding of numbers, nor in that of the number of products in its catalog. The P5 Plus series is thus positioned as a high-end solution in the category of M.2 NVMe SSDs, but is satisfied with theoretical speeds slightly lower than the tenors of the genre. And it must be admitted that in the context of a classic use (gaming or creative), gaining a hundred or two hundred megabytes per second doesn’t really upset much.

Still, the P5 Plus operates on a PCIe 4 interface like most of its congeners now. This allows it in particular to display compatibility with the Sony PS5, although it will then be necessary to stick a third-party heat sink – you can find around fifteen euros in the majority of online stores.

We are testing the 1 TB version here, but the series is also available in 500 GB and 2 TB. Please note, the 500 GB version displays theoretical speeds lower than those of its 1 and 2 TB counterparts.

Taking the form of a very classic M.2 2280 format module, the 1TB P5 Plus has two 176-layer TLC 3D NAND memory chips from Micron. This memory is managed by an original Micron controller too, a DM02A1. This is the first time we’ve come across this chip, which we don’t know much about except that it’s capable of handling eight channels. A 1 GB cache memory accompanies the set.

The 1TB P5 Plus is guaranteed for five years or 600TB of data write, whichever comes first, as is industry standard. While this isn’t the most incredible endurance we’ve encountered, it’s still very high and the overwhelming majority of users will find themselves much faster at the end of the duration than at the end of the term. endurance.
