BERLIN – A positive coronavirus test that allowed Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic to travel to Australia for the first grand slam of the season could be manipulated, the German magazine Spiegel said.

When checking the given QR code, the test first proved to be negative by the editors. In addition, there is a suspicion that the test is not from December 16, as Djokovic claims, but ten days later.

“Digital data indicates that the test results are not at all from December 16. The digital results show a timestamp from 14:21 Serbian time on December 26,” writes the German website Spiegel. Conventional test systems automatically generate such time stamps only a few minutes after the test results are known. The second option is to create a timestamp when the person downloads the results from the server.

The first possibility in the case of Djokovic’s test is that the test has the number 7371999 in the Serbian database, which is about 50,000 higher than the second test on December 22, which the world tennis unit proved to be healed and negative. According to Spiegel, as earlier tests have lower numbers in the Serbian database, this indicates that Djokovic’s positive test came only after the negative one on December 22 – apparently on December 26.

The result is negative at first

Another suspicious fact that the reporters came across is that when they scanned the QR code of the allegedly positive test, they showed that the result was negative. That was Monday at 1:19 PM CET. When they checked the test again at 14:33 CET, they already found the result to be positive.

In the event of a negative test, Djokovic, who is not vaccinated against covid-19, would not be able to arrive in Australia at all. He came to the country thanks to an exception for tennis players who have overcome the disease in the last six months.

Neither Djokovic nor Serbian officials have yet answered Spiegel’s questions about the ambiguities surrounding his coronavirus test.
