Extensive studies from Britain and South Africa have previously suggested similar findings.

WASHINGTON. Research in the US on a sample of 70,000 infected people coronavirus showed that in the case of variant infection omicron the likelihood of hospitalization was reduced compared to the variant delta by half, the probability of hospitalization in the intensive care unit by three quarters and the probability of death by up to 90 percent. Of the 50,000 people infected with the omicron, none needed artificial lung ventilation.

The average length of hospital stay with the omicron variant was only one and a half days. It was five days at the delta.

As many as 90 percent of patients with omicron were discharged from the hospital within three days.

The British came up with similar results

The research was conducted at the Kaiser Permanente medical network in Southern California from December 1 to January 2. It was attended by researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, Kaiser Permanente and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Similar conclusions have previously been suggested by extensive studies from Britain and Of the Republic of South Africa.

In vitro research in animals and cells found that omicron multiplied better in the upper respiratory tract than in the lungs, which explains the easier course of the disease.

Vaccines protect against omicron

A non-peer-reviewed study in California, according to CDC director Rochelle Walenska, took into account parameters such as age, gender, previous SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infection, vaccination and comorbidities.

According to the study, “omicron is less severe in itself than delta”, with a lower number of severe cases not only related to higher vaccinations and infertility.

The study further states that the current vaccines have lower potency against omicron, but continue to significantly protect against severe COVID-19 disease.

Despite the encouraging results of the research, Walenská urges caution, as omicron burdens the healthcare system due to high infectivity.

In the United States, there are now an average of three-quarters of new cases per day, approximately 150,000 hospitalizations and 1,600 covid-related deaths.
