Highly contagious variant omicron is spreading at a high rate in Austria. The APA agency reported that the local authorities set an absolute record in the number of new cases of the disease.

The Austrian Ministry of Health confirmed another 17,006 cases on Wednesday. That’s almost twice as much as a week ago. There were 11,516 infected people on Tuesday and 10,804 a day earlier.

According to the agency, it is not yet clear whether the omicron variant has an impact on hospital occupancy. The number of patients in healthcare facilities remains stable.
