Galaxy S20 FE owners will not be surprised by the equipment of the Galaxy S21 FE which, on paper, is identical. In terms of results, for the modules that it shares with the S21, the latest Samsung product offers results very comparable to those of its predecessor.
Main module: 12 Mpx, eq. 26mm, f / 1.8
It is difficult to verify if the Galaxy S21 FE is equipped with the same sensor as the S21, but it is clear that the quality of the shots varies very little between the two smartphones, at least in the center of the image. The sharpness is equivalent or almost, although we notice micro-contrasts a little more accentuated on that of the Fan Edition, in particular on the element of cartography. On the other hand, the scene is slightly more bluish. Note that on the outskirts of our scene, the smartphone concedes a little blur. But overall, the quality is there.
At night, the treatments operated by the two smartphones differ more. The S21 FE always prioritizes contrasts, allowing more details to be seen. Digital noise is a little less present, but at the cost of a little less accurate colorimetry. The colors, especially on the color beads of our test pattern, lose intensity… but a little less than with the Galaxy S20 FE.
Ultra wide-angle module: 12 Mpx, eq. 13mm, f / 2.2
Like the Galaxy S20 FE and the Galaxy S21, the S21 FE offers an ultra-wide-angle module built around a 12-megapixel sensor. With a few details related to the exhibition, the results offered by the smartphone are very comparable to those provided by the Galaxy S21, at least by day.
At nightfall, the cards are reshuffled. The noise particularly present in the image makes its elements difficult to read for the most part. Despite an attempt at a little brighter exposure, the colors are desaturated.
Telephoto module: 8 Mpx, eq. 76mm, f / 2.4
The third module of the Galaxy S21 FE can hardly be compared to that of the Galaxy S21, which relies on a 64 Mpx sensor and offers a 3x hybrid zoom. With its 8 Mpx sensor and its optical equivalent to 76 mm, like that of the S20 FE, the device is therefore the heir to the smartphone of 2020.
By day, moreover, it is clear that its results are practically identical. With the exception of a slightly bluer scene with the S21 FE, the level of detail is identical. Smoothing is contained, given the 3x magnification applied to the scene.
The Galaxy S21 FE behaves the same at night. The overall rendering is a little more rosy, but the level of detail – in drastic drop – is identical. We can see the same desaturation of the colored test patterns and the difficulty in restoring certain elements: the grave accent of “library” turns into acute accent on the shots of the S21 FE and S20 FE.
Front and video module
Like the Galaxy S20 FE, but unlike the “straightforward” Galaxy S21 with a 10 Mpx sensor, the S21 FE has a 32 Mpx sensor on the front panel with a wide-angle f / 2.2 lens. Nothing very surprising therefore, the smartphone allowing to take pictures in natural tones, but suffering from an often visible smoothing. It is possible to adjust the intensity of the blur associated with its portrait mode, sometimes with difficulty with the less smooth hair.
In the video department, Samsung still offers the possibility of filming up to 4K at 60 fps on the back as well as on the front.
