Vivo Y72 5G test: endurance above all – Les Numériques

The Y72 5G is equipped with a triple photo module consisting of a 64 Mpx wide-angle, whose lens opens at f / 1.8, an 8 Mpx ultra-wide-angle (f / 2) and a macro sensor.

This configuration has become widely democratized over the past two years. It is also found on the OnePlus Nord CE 5G with which we can compare it.

Like all its congeners, the Y72 5G uses the technique of pixel binning to take standard shots. The latter allows four (or nine) photosites to be merged into one in order to capture more light. This results in 16MP photos, although it is still possible to shoot at full definition.

Under normal conditions, the Vivo Y72 has a general tendency to offer a white balance that draws on warm hues. The rendering offered by Vivo is rather accentuated, while the contrast is reinforced and offers a more flattering aspect, but not necessarily more natural. The OnePlus Nord CE opts for a less aggressive treatment and delivers more faithful colors.

At night, the same observation can be made. On the OnePlus, digital noise makes its appearance, the level of detail inevitably drops and the colors have lost a lot of their brilliance. The Vivo’s rendering is superior, to the detriment of visible digital smoothing.

64 MP mode

We isolated an area of identical size (0.90 Mpx) to compare the two shots. You can see the difference between standard definition and full definition.

Day or night, this mode does not provide significant detail gain. There is a difference in colorimetry, even if it is not obvious on the test scene. In full definition, the white balance seemed fairer to us.

The 64 Mpx mode allows you to crop the pictures, which can be useful when retouching. In this case, they also weigh more heavily on the storage space. It will therefore be necessary to use it knowingly.

Ultra wide-angle module: 8 Mpx, f / 2.2, eq. 13 mm

The ultra-wide-angle sensor has become a staple on almost all smartphones. The Y72 offers one, but as often, the quality is not extraordinary, far from it.

Unsurprisingly, neither of the two smartphones offers a convincing rendering. The level of detail has dropped sharply, although the OnePlus keeps a little more. The color of the Vivo is once again too yellow.

At night, the rendering is difficult to use on the two shots. Vivo offers the worst result with algorithms that end up opting for blur when trying to manage low light.

Front and video module

A 16 MP (f / 2) sensor is housed in the central punch at the front. The rendering is pretty decent in good light conditions and without moving, but it gets tough in the dark. The general color here is a little too cold. The portrait mode bokeh is quite successful, even if it is easily fooled by flyaways of hair.

The smartphone is capable of filming in Full HD at 60 fps. This is not a videographer’s device. The sensor struggles to cope with highlights and lacks stabilization. Watch out for micro-tremors.
