MELBOURNE – Monday’s court will decide whether the world’s first tennis player Novak Djokovic will get the opportunity to defend the title at the Australian Open grand slam, or will travel home, as Czech player Renata Voráčová had to leave. At the heart of the dispute is the legitimacy of Djokovic’s visas. The Serbian tennis player was originally granted an exemption from the otherwise compulsory vaccination to allow entry into Australia.

Djokovic allegedly received it on the basis of overcoming the coronavirus in December, his request for exemption was assessed and approved by two independent commissions. However, on Wednesday’s arrival in Melbourne, he was detained by immigration officials and placed in a detention hotel due to a bad type of visa, which did not allow entry.

Djokovic was originally scheduled to leave Australia by Thursday, but his lawyers are trying to reverse the court’s decision. It will take place on Monday and the request of state officials for a transfer to Wednesday has not changed anything. Judge Anthony Kelly denied it. The trial is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. Australian time, at midnight of ours, by a lawyer, a tennis player, then the prosecutor will be given space. Both parties will have two hours to present their arguments.

It is not clear when the court will rule. Kelly has already announced that they do not intend to be bound by a public request from the Australian Tennis Association that the matter be resolved by Tuesday, January 11th. The Australian Open will begin in Melbourne on Monday 17 January.
