In Vienna, protesters gathered in the afternoon on Heroes’ Square and the adjacent Maria Theresa Square. The demonstration was mostly peaceful, but later there were several arrests. The march of demonstrators began at around 3 pm, but was stopped shortly afterwards by the police at the Vienna Opera House.

She had to check on several people in the front lines, whom she noticed that they had pyrotechnics and other dangerous objects. Several protesters tried to break through the barriers, to which the police responded with pepper spray. At around 3.30 pm, the police wrote on Twitter that the procession of demonstrators had moved again.

The protesters carried banners with the usual slogans concerning, for example, the planned mandatory coronavirus vaccination, and drew attention to themselves with the sound of cow bells, horns and whistles. Police estimated the number of participants at 40,000. There were also temporary traffic restrictions in the center of Vienna this Saturday due to protests. Around 1,000 police officers from Vienna and other Austrian federal states were deployed.

Protests also took place in Germany

Around 16,000 people protested in Hamburg, Germany, on anti-crime policies on Saturday. Although the organizers called on megaphones to keep their distance and put on their veils, many refused. Police said on Twitter that one of the protesters wore the star of David with the words “unvaccinated”. Police have launched an investigation into this person on suspicion of incitement to hatred.

Dozens of people in cars and bicycles came to a peaceful protest in the capital Berlin. According to police, a total of about 150 people took part in the demonstration, including more than 100 vehicles and 20 bicycles. In the northern German city of Schwerin, about 1,600 people demonstrated on the march to the sounds of drums and trumpets. At the head of the procession they carried a banner with the words “Parents and grandparents say !!! NO !!! vaccination of children against covidid!”

About 2,500 people gathered in the city of Minden in North Rhine-Westphalia to counter-demonstrate against supporters of the Querdenken (Unconventional Thinking) movement, whose members are covid deniers, far-right activists and anti-vaxers. One of the protesters carried a poster with the inscription “Yes to freedom of opinion and cohesion; definitely not to hatred, threats and violence”.

German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach noted for the Welt am Sonntag newspaper that covid deniers and vaccine opponents “new and worrying developments in post-war Germany”. “This small group is willing to throw all scientific knowledge off the table and voluntarily enter the bubble of false truths,” stated.
