Weather Alert: Snow in Lorraine, strong wind on Saturday in the West and in the North – La Chaîne Météo

Situation

After the brief period of calm weather in the middle of the week, the weather becomes again very agitated and disturbed over France, under the influence of a very dynamic west to north-west regime in which the disturbances follow one another over Europe from the west and France. One of them, quite active, comes up against cold air this evening and this night in the Grand Est region. Lorraine is particularly affected by moderate snowfall between 10 p.m. this evening and 6 a.m. this Saturday.

During the day on Saturday, under the influence of a vast low pressure system over the north Atlantic, an active disturbed front crossed a large north-western half of the country accompanied by violent gusts of wind.

Observation

The episode of snow and strong wind has not yet started. In Lorraine, a sprinkling of snow in instead this morning (0 to 2 cm) as a not very active disturbance passed. The soils are slightly bleached from 300 m but the snow melts in the afternoon below 500 m.

Evolution

Evening and night from Friday to Saturday, a disturbance from the English Channel will cross the north-eastern part of France. It will arrive in western Lorraine from 10 p.m. causing light to moderate snowfall. Between midnight and 6 a.m., the entire region will be affected with intensities of 1 to 2 cm per hour. From 4 am, the west of the region will return to dry weather while the Vosges and the east of the region will not see the snow disturbance evacuate until around 6-7 am. We expect an average of 3 to 6 cm but locally 8-10 cm above 500-600 m altitude. Traffic conditions may be made difficult on untreated roads, in particular the secondary network with a risk of icy roads under slightly negative temperatures above 400 m altitude.

Saturday morning, Lorraine will return to dry weather and traffic conditions should quickly improve with temperatures returning to positive during the morning. In the west, as the new Atlantic disturbance approaches, the wind will gradually strengthen during the morning between Brittany, Cotentin and Pays de la Loire with gusts reaching 70-80 km / h on the exposed coasts from Brittany.

Saturday afternoon, the wind will suddenly strengthen over Brittany with the arrival of the disturbed front which will be accompanied by violent gusts of the order of 80-90 km / h in the land and 100 to 110 km / h occasionally on the coasts . The exposed capes of Finistère and Morbihan could even see gusts reaching 120 km / h. During the afternoon, this strong gale will sweep across the north-west of the country, to the north of New Aquitaine. The gusts will reach 70 and 90 km / h inland and 90-100 km / h, on the Atlantic coast, locally 110 km / h on the most exposed islands and capes. Ile-de-France and Hauts-de-France should be affected by the gale at the very end of the afternoon with gusts of 70-80 km / h, locally 90 km / h in the weakest sectors. more exposed to the southwest wind.

Saturday night, it is the regions of a small north-eastern quarter which will be swept by the strong gale with gusts of 70 to 90 km / h when passing the disturbed front. The most violent gusts are expected in the relief areas with up to 130 km / h on the Vosges ridges at the end of the evening. In the northwest, the wind will blow less violently but a few strong gusts of wind may still occur as squalls pass.

After midnight, the disturbed front will have evacuated towards Germany and the wind will blow much less strongly in the northeast; the wind alert can be lifted. However, another special release will take over for the heavy rainfall expected in the southwest between Sunday and Monday.
