Alma-Ata residents still have problems accessing the Internet, Interfax agency reported on Friday.

State channel Chabar 24 said on Thursday that Kazakhstan had temporarily restricted internet access “to ensure security”.

Internet access was restored on Thursday evening, but two hours later in Nur-Sultan and Alma-Ata, it “dropped out” again and Alma-Ate did not work on Friday morning. Messages sent from abroad via messengers cannot be received either.

The situation in Kazakhstan escalated on January 2, when rallies began in Zanaozen in the west against a sharp rise in liquefied gas prices. They then grew into massive protests across the country with economic and political demands.
