Peter Bogdanovich was born in 1939 in the US state of New York, his father was a Serbian painter. At the age of 12, he began keeping a file of his views on every film he saw, the Hollywood Reporter recalled. At the age of 16, he studied acting with the legendary Stella Adler. He started as a film journalist and critic, eventually becoming a film director.

From the beginning, he was considered a director with a strong author’s handwriting, writes AP. Bogdanovich also impressed the audience with the melancholic black-and-white film The Last Performance in 1971, which received eight nominations for the prestigious Oscar, two of which he also won (for supporting acting roles). Two years later, he made Paper Moon, and the adaptation of Henry James’ novel Daisy Miller in 1974 praised him.

After the crazy comedy What’s next, Doctor? (What’s Up, Doc? – 1972) with Barbara Streisand, the nostalgic Paper Moon (1973), where only 10-year-old Tatum O’Neal won the Oscar, the costume story Daisy Miller (Daisy Miller -1974) and Nickelodeon (1976), Bogdanovich’s career began to decline, due to the largely violent death of the Playboy model. Bogdanovich has also had an acting career. Among other things, he played a small role as a DJ in Quentin Tarantino’s film Kill Bill, or e.g. the role of a psychiatrist in the Sopranos series.

Because of the affair with model and actress Dorothy Stratten, with whom he made The All Laughed (1981), the tabloids became interested in him. Stratten was married and her husband killed her and herself. The tragedy occurred before the release of Bogdanovich’s They All Laughed: Stratten starred in this film in her first lead role alongside Audrey Hepburn. In 1988, Bogdanovich married Dorothy’s 20-year-old sister Louis, whom he had been dating since she was 14. His affair with actress Cybill Shepherd was also known when he was still married to Polly Platt, the AP recalls.

“It’s a shock. I’m devastated. He was an amazing and great artist,” director Francis Ford Coppola responded today to the news of Bogdanovich’s death. “I will never forget the premiere of The Last Performance. I remember at the end the audience jumped up around me and a round of applause lasted for 15 minutes (..) May he enjoy the excitement of our applause forever, ” he added.
