Regional 2021: overseas, a strong abstention and the bonus for graduates

The elections to renew the elected representatives of the departments, regions or local authorities of Réunion, Guadeloupe, Guyana and Martinique were marked, Sunday, June 20, by a record abstention, only Mayotte having stood out with a participation rate of 64%.

The outgoing presidents of the regional councils of Guadeloupe, Ary Chalus (LREM), and of Reunion, Didier Robert (various right), won the polls, as did the outgoing president of the Territorial Collectivity of Guyana, Rodolphe Alexandre (DVG ).

In Guadeloupe, a re-election in the first round narrowly missed

The outgoing president of the Guadeloupe Region, Ary Chalus (LREM), narrowly missed a re-election in the first round, winning 49.31% of the votes.

The list led by the outgoing president of the department, Josette Borel Lincertin (FGPS, Guadeloupean Federation of the Socialist Party), comes far behind in second position, with 17.38% of the vote, followed by Ronald Selbonne, the surprise of this election. Alyans spokesperson Nasyonal Gwadloup represents the nationalist movement.

This electoral campaign was marked by political and financial inquiries. Thus, Ary Chalus was taken into custody as part of an investigation for “breach of trust, embezzlement of public funds and illegal financing” of the 2015 election campaign.

In Guyana, the outgoing president largely in the lead

The outgoing president of the territorial collectivity of Guyana, Rodolphe Alexandre (DVG), came by far in the first round of the elections with 43.72% of the votes cast, but without obtaining the victory he hoped for from this first deadline. The deputy candidate Gabriel Serville (DVG) is in second position with 27.67% of the vote.

Jean-Paul Ferreira (DVG), Amerindian mayor of the small town of Awala Yalimapo (North West), comes in third position with 23.34% of the votes cast, despite the support of the former Keeper of the Seals, Guyanese Christiane Taubira.

Serge Letchimy supplants the outgoing president in Martinique

The list led by deputy Serge Letchimy (DVG) came first in the first round of the territorial ballot in Martinique with 31.66% of the vote ahead of that of the outgoing president, the independentist Alfred Marie Jeanne, who obtained 25.80% .

Jean Philippe Nilor, deputy from the south, dissident of the independence movement, finished in third place with 12.01% of the vote. The various left senator Catherine Conconne totals 10.63% of the vote.

In Reunion, Didier Robert in the lead despite the business

The various right Didier Robert, outgoing president of the Reunion region, finished first in the first round of regional with 31.10% of the vote. Sentenced on May 21 to a 15-month suspended prison sentence and three years of ineligibility in a case of illegal taking of interest, he appealed, which allowed him to lead this campaign.

Behind him, Huguette Bello, the various left mayor of Saint-Paul (west of the island) and Ericka Bareigts, the PS mayor of Saint-Denis, are placed respectively in second and third position with 20.74% and 18.48 %.

The other left-wing candidates are not qualified for the second round, but the total of the left-wing votes, which had not succeeded in its union, exceeds that of Didier Robert.

Almost 64% participation in Mayotte

The Republicans (LR) performed well in Mayotte, where the departmental elections experienced, despite the health context, a high turnout of nearly 64%.

The right, which presented pairs in nine out of 13 cantons, managed to qualify for the second round in seven cantons, in particular in Sada where the deputy Mansour Kamardine, who aims for the presidency of the department, came first in the first round. He will face, next Sunday, a pair close to Senator LREM, Thani Mohamed Soilihi.

Only one pair was elected in the first round in Mayotte. They are Maymounati Moussa Ahamadi and Ali Omar (New impetus for Mayotte), elected in the canton of Dzaoudzi-Labattoir.
