Sudan: thousands of demonstrators mobilized against the military power

Thousands of Sudanese protest Thursday, January 6, across the country against the military power, a few days after the resignation of the civilian Prime Minister, according to witnesses on the spot.

Despite a strong police presence in Khartoum, the demonstrators are heading towards the presidential palace in the center of the capital, according to the same source.

The streets surrounding the presidential palace and the nearby army headquarters were closed to traffic. Protesters play drums, sing patriotic songs and hold up signs with photos of people killed since the coup.

On October 25, the army chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhane, carried out a coup, ending a transition to fully civilian power, nearly two years after the fall of Omar el- Bashir, the former dictator in power for three decades.

Reinstalled by General Burhane a month after the coup d’etat after being detained, the Prime Minister and civilian face of the transition Abdallah Hamdok resigned on January 2, after a day of violently repressed demonstrations that caused three dead.

“I have tried my best to prevent the country from sliding into disaster, as today it crosses a dangerous turning point which threatens its survival,” Abdallah Hamdok said in his address to the nation.

In total since the coup, at least 57 people have been killed and hundreds more injured, according to the Physicians’ Committee, an independent union.
