Just as fully discharging the battery to 0% capacity, fully charging 100% lithium batteries is detrimental and shortens their life. Or?

Tesla switched to a new battery technology in its basic model called the Model 3, which is powered exclusively by the rear axle. She is not really new, she is one of the older ones, but only in the recent past have engineers been able to remove the negatives it involves. I’ve written more about that in this article.

New batteries called LFP – lithium iron-phosphate are cheaper to manufacture and Tesla has been using them for a long time in models made in China. But new batteries are gradually coming to other markets. Model 3 RWD 2022 replaced the Standard Range + version in the price lists. The car has a slightly worse acceleration, but it gained an extra 14 kilometers according to the EPA (437 km). Acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h is in 5.8 seconds and the maximum speed is the same 225 km / h.

At first, it seemed that basically nothing was changing for the customer, but the manufacturer’s instincts say otherwise. He explains that, if possible, the car should always be charged to 100% battery capacity, at worst at 100% at least once a week. Such charging will extend the range and battery life. Tesla adds that if the car has been standing for a long time, there is no need to limit yourself when driving, but at the end of the road it is absolutely necessary to charge the vehicle to the full 100%.

Such recommendations must be related to battery chemistry and are a big change compared to vehicles equipped with NCA batteries (so far). For them, Tesla recommended not to use full charging 100% for daily duties and to fully charge only for longer trips (sporadically).

Apart from the change of the name in the price list and the parameters in the technical documentation, the car does not in any way indicate that it has a different battery chemistry. In addition to the above-mentioned information and documents, this can also be found in the infotainment menu, where 50% and 100% are displayed on the bar in the charging panel in the Set Limit menu instead of the previous “Daily” and “Trip”.

In the same context, the Council also recommends disabling Sentry Mode when it is not needed. According to Tesla, it’s best to leave it off, except at home at work and in your favorite places. This is also a thing that prolongs the range.

In short, for most electric vehicles, charging to 100% capacity with each charge is not entirely happy, but for electric cars with LFP batteries, the batteries need to be charged for proper operation and the ability of the vehicle to accurately estimate their performance, state of charge and range. 100% condition.

By the way, LFP batteries will not only be in the basic Model 3. Their larger deployment is, so to speak, a drop in other manufacturers as well. It is this technology that is supposed to be a significant help in reducing the price of electric cars, and the Volkswagen Group, for example, also has plans for these batteries with its planned smallest and cheapest electric cars.
