Covid-19: 332,000 new infections and 66,000 more first-time vaccines, announces Olivier Véran – archyde

The epidemic outbreak continues in France. More than 332,000 new infections with SARS-CoV-2 have been recorded by Public Health France, Wednesday January 5, 22% more than the day before. This figure is unprecedented. The number of hospitalized patients continued to increase, especially in critical care units. In addition, 66,000 people received a first dose of vaccine, announced the Minister of Health, Olivier Véran.

As of Tuesday, a total of 272,000 cases of contamination had been recorded in twenty-four hours, a figure which had not yet been reached. Over the last seven days, the average is now approaching 200,000 positive screenings.

• The hospital a little more under pressure

This surge keeps the pressure on hospitals, which admitted 2,500 new Covid-19 patients on Wednesday, including nearly 400 in critical care. The admissions are always more numerous than the discharges, since 20,688 infected patients are now treated (+502) including 3,700 in critical care (+ 30).

Health establishments have meanwhile counted 246 deaths during the day, bringing the human toll of the virus to nearly 125,000 deaths.

While the deputies have bitter debates on the vaccination past, this health degradation is accompanied by a rebound of the injections of first doses. The Minister of Health, Olivier Véran, reported 66,000 first-time vaccinations on Wednesday, a daily figure that had not been reached since 1^er October.

The Minister of Health implied that this clear increase in first-time injections had a link with the debates on the vaccination pass and the controversial remarks of Emmanuel Macron, slipping that he did not believe “Not at random”.

“If we did this for seventy or seventy-five days, we would have complete protection of the French population against serious forms”, said the minister to the National Assembly. Some 5 million French people have not received a dose of vaccine against Covid-19, of which around a fifth is considered to be a population at risk.
