CES 2022 – Sony unveils the first QD-Oled TV and its new Oleds – archyworldys

Sony created a sensation at CES 2002 by unveiling the first QD-Oled television probably – even if Sony does not communicate on the subject – equipped with the famous QD-Oled panel manufactured by Samsung Display, the Samsung subsidiary dedicated to the production of LCD and Oled screen.

Sony Bravia XR A95K: the QD-Oled revolution

The Sony Bravia A95K television therefore has a QD-Oled panel. This panel uses three blue sub-pixels, two of which turn into green and red thanks to the use of quantum dots excited by blue light. Unlike Oled panels produced by LG Display, this panel does not use a white subpixel to increase image brightness and improve lifespan. The use of quantum dots should allow the “natural” increase in luminosity without having to resort to this famous white sub-pixel, which should result in the image by a greater volume of color. The very bright red should be less washed out than on a “classic” Oled TV equipped with a WRGB panel from LG Display. According to Sony, the use of quantum dots also eliminates the need for a color filter, which improves viewing angles in the process. Already excellent on the classic Oled models, they should therefore be even better on this QD-Oled television.

For the rest, the Sony A95K television is a very high-end model that features the most powerful Sony XR processor, ensuring precise scaling and perfectly clear motion compensation. It also offers full HDMI 2.1 compatibility with support for 4K / 120 Hz, VRR, ALLM and eARC, an Acoustic Surface Audio + audio system made up of two vibration motors that vibrate the panel as well as two boxes. bass, and of course the Google TV system with all its applications and always the microphone integrated into the television for hands-free use of Google Assistant. Sony has integrated an Auto HDR Tone Mapping mode for PS5 which allows the console to detect the model of Sony television used and to automatically choose an HDR preset adapted to the capabilities of the panel.

A camera to optimize image and sound

This model also includes a webcam, soberly called Bravia Cam, which can be used for conversations on Google Duo, but not only. Indeed, Sony uses the camera to optimize the brightness of the image and the audio balance according to the user’s position. If several users are in front of the TV, optimization is done for the one in the center. The camera is also used for gesture control to turn up the volume, change channels, pause or even turn off the TV with a simple wave of the hand. Off by default, Proximity Alert displays an alert when the user is too close to the TV, causing children to step back. Finally, the power saving mode automatically reduces the brightness of the screen when no one is in front of it.

More anecdotal, the remote control loses the numeric keys and becomes more compact, going from 49 to 25 keys only. It retains the backlight and benefits from a handy new function that allows you to find it simply by asking the television “OK Google, where is the remote control?” ; simple, but you had to think about it.

On paper, QD-Oled technology therefore looks very promising, but Sony does not communicate on the coverage of color spaces or on the peak of maximum brightness that can be reached by this technology. It will therefore be necessary to wait for the first tests to form an opinion on this precise point.

A price that promises to be high

Sony has not communicated the price of its QD-Oled television either, which will be available only in 55 and 65-inch versions, but the price promises to be particularly high. We are talking about a price of around € 6,000 for the 65-inch QD-Oled model, twice as much as the current one. Sony Bravia XR-65A90J with its Oled Evo panel from LG Display displayed at around 3000 €.

A complete OLED range

If the Sony A90J remains in the catalog for 2022, it is supported by the Sony A90K – only available in 42 and 48 inch versions – by taking over a large part of the features of the A90J, such as the Oled panel from LG Display (but not the Oled Evo model which does not yet exist in these small diagonals), the hands-free microphone integrated into the television or the Sony XR processor. The Sony A80J will be replaced by the Sony A80K available in 55, 65 and 77 inches with an identical Oled panel and very similar features. On these Oled models, the new features are limited to HDR Tone Mapping for PS5, the features offered by the Bravia CAM (optional for the A80K and A90K) and Acoustic Center Sync. The good news is that these models should be sold at “normal” prices for Oled televisions.

Sony’s range of Oled televisions is thus very complete with the A80K at the entry level, the A90J / A90K on the mid-range and the A95K with its QD-Oled panel on the very high-end segment.
