DEATH – A cult actress has passed away. American actress Betty white has died at the age of 99, announced the TMZ site this Friday, December 31, a sad news confirmed in the wake of the Associated Press by its long-time agent.

The artist, whose career on the small screen spanned almost 70 years and won no less than five Emmy Awards, would celebrate its 100th anniversary in a few days, on January 17, 2022.

Across the Atlantic, his face was familiar to everyone. The one who started out as a talk show host when the format was barely taking its first steps was now considered a national cultural treasure.

Her career took on a noticeable scale with the role of Sue Ann Nivens in the Mary Tyler Moore Show between 1973 and 1977, then Betty White became cult with the naive character of Rose Nylund in the sitcomThe Golden Girls (The Crunchies, in French) between 1985 and 1992 (below).

The series, one of the most watched of the time, featured four single friends deciding to start a roommate in Florida. Her success was born out of the play of the main actresses as well as their ability to approach with humor many controversial topics in the 1980s such as poverty, immigration, homosexuality, marriage for all, HIV, sexism, the euthanasia, the environment and many others. Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty having died, Betty White was until Saturday the last survivor of the Golden Girls.

She made a strong comeback in 2010 with the series Hot in Cleveland (2010-2015) and a Snickers commercial that aired in front of more than 100 million Americans for the Super Bowl (below).

She had lent her voice to a character from “Toy Story 4” in 2019, and had also appeared in the series “Love, Glory and Beauty”. “It’s amazing that I’m still in this job, and that you still support me!”, Said the actress at the Emmy Awards in 2018.

Asked about her upcoming centenary, the actress who had animal rights as a passion was astonished at her longevity. “My 100th birthday … I can’t believe it’s coming,” she tweeted on Tuesday, sharing an interview made for the occasion.

Betty White was “a lovely lady,” President Joe Biden said. “She has made generations of Americans laugh, she is a cultural icon that will be sorely missed”. “Who didn’t like Betty White?” Responded his wife Jill.
