The Korean carmaker Hyundai is already stopping the development of new internal combustion engines and will focus mainly on the development of electric propulsion. The portal informed about the company’s new plans Electrek.

The massively popular Hyundai has also been developing its own internal combustion engines in Slovakia for more than 40 years. During this time, it has managed to develop a number of very well-sold units, but we will not see any new combustion units.

As stated KoreaEconomicDaily, employees working on the development of burners received an e-mail in which the company confirmed to them what has been talked about for some time.

Fortunately, they will not lose their jobs

Hyundai dissolves the entire team working in the development of combustion units, but divides most of the employees into new industries focused on the development of electric motors and the remaining powertrain.

There are only a few employees left in the internal combustion engine sector who will modify the existing units so that Hyundai can benefit from the already developed engines for as long as possible and sell cars with older internal combustion engines in addition to electric cars in selected markets.

Up to 12,000 people worked on internal combustion engines. Hyundai is joining other major European automakers that have also stopped developing internal combustion engines. With the definitive onset of electromobility, every car manufacturer wants to be ready in time and wants to have a sufficiently long development and testing of electric cars.

Hyundai is one of the most successful, which he convinced its current electric car Ioniq 5 also in our test. The decision to end the incinerators will probably affect the engines of the KIA concern group, which also has one of its factories near Žilina and employs thousands of Slovaks.

Hydrogen is still in the game

However, unlike European players, Hyundai does not close its doors to hydrogen. The Hyundai Nexo is one of the best hydrogen cars on the market and has managed to break several records in the past.

Australian Rally driver Brendan Reeves drove a hydrogen Hyundai Nexo on one tank for almost 900 km, setting a new world record for the car.

With the Hyundai Nexo, he set out on the route from Melbourne to Broken Hill, and the on-board computer reported to him after reaching the finish line that he had covered a respectable 887.5 km, thus breaking the previous French record of 778 km.

Of course, before the start, he was sealed for refueling, so that he wouldn’t think of refueling a little hydrogen somewhere along the way. As stated FuelCellsWorks, Hyundai Nexo has a paper range of 666 km according to the WLTP, Reeves has covered it by more than 200 km.

Interestingly, GPS and Google Maps even showed that the distance traveled was up to 905 km, which is an even more impressive result, but the data from the on-board computer are taken into account to recognize the record. The journey took 13 hours and 6 minutes and the average speed was 66.9 km / h. In total, the car consumed 6.27 kg of hydrogen with an average consumption of 0.706 kg / 100 km.
