PRAGUE. The government of the new Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala approved on Wednesday a proposal to freeze the salaries of all constitutional officials for a period of one year.

At the same time, it agreed to increase wages for employees involved in the fight against the pandemic coronavirus, informed the Novinky.cz server.

“We have decided to propose a wage freeze for all constitutional officials for a period of one year. The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs is already preparing the relevant amendment to the law,” Fiala said after the government meeting.

The salary freeze will concern the president, senators, deputies, members of the government, constitutional and other judges, the management of the Supreme Audit Office or members of the board of the Czech National Bank.

Fiala called the move natural in a situation where the salaries of most civil servants are stagnating.

At the end of his term, Fiala’s predecessor also proposed a halt to the salary growth of top politicians Andrej Babiš. The current majority of the government rejected this at the time, saying that it was pre-election populism.

The unions criticized the government’s decision to freeze civil service salaries, making it a mockery of tens of thousands of civil servants and officials.

At the same time, the Purple Cabinet decided to increase the salaries of those state employees who are at the forefront of the fight against the Covid. Added will be given to paramedics, police, soldiers, firefighters, social workers and teachers of regional schools. On the contrary, the salaries of civil servants will remain at the same level.

The previous government of Andrej Babiš proposed a widespread increase in salaries in the state sphere of 1,400 crowns, but this was opposed by the Minister of Finance, Zbyněk Stanjura.

The government also approved a plan on Wednesday to help people and businesses affected by high energy prices.

Households will be able to benefit from the housing allowance and emergency immediate assistance has been approved for people who have high arrears and are in a state of material need. Companies will also be able to apply for state support.
