The most significant excess mortality was in the group of younger seniors, ie from 65 to 74 years. The worst situation was in the Prešov region, where 95 percent more people died compared to previous years. The Statistical Office (SO) of the Slovak Republic informed about it on Tuesday.

“The total mortality rate exceeded 50 percent in November 2021, the fourth highest figure this year and the fifth highest since the beginning of the pandemic. The increase in deaths was due to COVID-19 infection. was three times more than in October and at the same time more than 15 percent higher than last November, “ said Zuzana Podmanická, director of the Department of Population Statistics of the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic.

Almost 5,600 deaths in November were seniors. Compared to the average, 56 percent more died. “The worsening epidemic situation has been most pronounced since the start of the pandemic in the 65-74 age group. During the very bad first months of this year, the number of younger elderly deaths was about twice as high, now in November it was 72 percent.” said Podmanická, who said that the over-mortality of people in the productive age (from 15 to 64 years) tripled month-on-month.

Differences between regions

Differences between regions have also deepened. In the eight regions of the Slovak Republic, the increase in the number of deaths compared to the previous five years ranged from 22 to 95 percent. “On a month-on-month basis, the situation worsened most of all the regions in eastern Slovakia and the Banská Bystrica region. The record was the Košice region, where the mortality rate jumped from 24 percent in October to 78 percent in November,” statisticians.

The worst situation was in the Prešov region, where 95 percent more people died than in previous years. It was followed by the Košice Region (78 percent overdraft) and the Banská Bystrica Region (68 percent overdue). “On the contrary, only a small deterioration of the situation compared to October was reflected in the Nitra and Trnava regions, but also in these regions a quarter more people died than in previous years,” noted from the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic.

During November, Slovaks most often died of diseases of the circulatory system

The most common causes of death during November were diseases of the circulatory system. These accounted for 36 percent of all deaths out of 7,167. Compared to the average of the previous five years, their number was one-fifth higher. The Statistical Office (SO) of the Slovak Republic informed about it on Tuesday.

The second most common cause of death was COVID-19, which affected 1,443 people, accounting for about a fifth of deaths. “The number of deaths from COVID-19 has tripled month-on-month, with one in five deaths caused by every fifth death in November. At the same time, almost 200 more people have suffered from the disease than in November a year ago.” said Zuzana Podmanická, director of the Department of Population Statistics of the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic.

Almost 90 percent year-on-year increases in COVID-19 deaths were recorded by statisticians in people of working age (15 to 64 years). “While last November, older seniors (over the age of 75, note) accounted for the majority of all victims of the virus, in November 2021, their proportion was less than half (48 percent).” specified by the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic.

Situation in the regions

From a regional point of view, COVID-19 infection had the largest share of all deaths in the Trenčín Region (27 percent). “The best part was the Nitra and Trnava regions, where the new virus caused only every sixth death and in both of these regions it dropped to third place in the list of the most common causes of death,” statisticians pointed out.

The third most common cause of death in the Slovak Republic in the previous month was respiratory diseases, in which 1,123 people died and accounted for almost 16 percent of the total number of deaths. “This group of diseases as the cause of death had the most dynamic increase of all causes of death and made the highest jump compared to the previous five years – the current number of deaths was four times higher,” warned.

In fourth place were tumors in which, with the exception of September and October, fewer people had died since the beginning of 2021 than the five-year average. “More than 1,000 people have suffered from this cause (14 percent of all deaths). At the same time, cancer in various forms has killed almost 11 percent fewer people than in November.” noted that this statement applies to all age groups.
