No exceptions

“The law on backup does not recognize any exceptions. All disposable plastic and tin containers for beverages, from 0.1 to 3 liters, regardless of whether they are Slovak or imported brands, will be backed up by 15 cents,” says Lucia Morvai, Director of External Relations and Communications, Administrator of the Backup System.

Such undamaged packaging can be returned to more than 2,000 stores across the country. “More than 900 of our stores will participate in voluntary collection. This is the most among all food chains in Slovakia. Some stores will use vending machines, in the remaining stores we will go with a manual collection system.” Branislav Lellák, Chief Sales Officer of COOP Jednota Slovensko, told the daily.

How will the system work?

Therefore, only the most important question remains to be answered: How will the whole system work?

Well, the customer returns the bottles and cans to the vending machine at the store. After this operation, the device will then offer a choice of either a financial credit, ie a deposit for the handed over packaging (discounts from the purchase) or possibly receive a paid deposit directly in cash.

It is necessary to change this habit

It is extremely important that the packaging is in the most original condition possible, ie not compressed by brute force, as some of us have done so far when handling empty PET bottles or cans. The machine will not accept damaged packaging. The packaging must also be marked with the symbol Z. “It is very important for the backup system to return the packaging in its original shape, ie clean, empty, uncompressed, with a legible bar code marked” Z “and a lid.” adds Director Morvai. The machines also accept packaging without the “Z” marking, ie from the years 2020 or 2021, no will not pay advances for those.

And what about strings? Are they ready?

In the interest of the new change, the chains themselves were also asked whether they were ready for this change. Some have slot machines running now.

“The Terno and Kraj stores are ready, we have tested the system in advance, as we have had test runs. We have been running the system in normal mode since the new year,” said Marek Koštrna, marketing manager Terno.

“Lidl started preparations for the backup system as early as the summer of 2020. In selected supermarkets, it allowed customers to hand over plastic packaging and cans, promising to donate 10 cents to each organization to restore green space in cities.” said Tomáš Bezák, head of the Lidl Slovakia communications department, about the New Year’s change.

Billa stores are also ready for a change and will have a total of two types of backup machines. One in the interior of the store and the other in the exterior, located in the parking lot. “It will be visually marked so that no one will overlook it. In that case, it will be within 150 meters of the store entrance. We have tested both solutions according to the type and capabilities of the store.” explains Kvetoslava Kirchnerová, a spokeswoman for BIlla.
