MOSCOW – Russian President Vladimir Putin has criticized the diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics by the United States, Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom. Unlike US President Joe Biden, he will attend the opening ceremony, which is scheduled for February 4 in the Chinese capital.

According to Putin, the purpose of the boycott is only to slow down China’s progress. “There can be no other motive for this. It is an unacceptable and wrong decision. We have always been against the politicization of sport,” Putin was quoted by the DPA.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has not yet decided whether to join the diplomatic boycott, French President Emmanuel Macron does not find it useful.
