BERLIN. The German Robert Koch Institute (RKI) on Monday raised the risk assessment for the local population in connection with the dissemination of the variant omicron. RKI wrote this on the social network Twitter.

RKI estimates the risk that Covid-19 represents a very high level for the overall health of the population in Germany. The rapidly spreading new variant of coronavirus omicron may suddenly increase the number of new cases.

According to experience from other countries, Omicron spreads much faster and more efficiently than previous variants of the virus.

“This can lead to a sudden increase in infections and a rapid overload of the health system,” the institute said.

German experts estimate that the risk of infection is “very high” for unvaccinated citizens. The same goes for people who have received two benefits vaccines, but have not yet received a booster dose.

According to the RKI, the risk is “moderate” for people who have three doses of the vaccine. The institute pointed out that this current assessment may change “in the short term”.
