CINEMA – After 18 years of absence, Neo, Trinity and Morpheus are back. Matrix Ressurections, the fourth part of the saga started in 1999 by the Wachowski sisters, out this Wednesday, December 22 At the movie theater. But if emblematic actors of the film are showing, there is one unanswered question: will Laurence Fishburne be there, will he reprise his role?
The trailer forMatrix Ressurections (visible at the head of the article) suggests not. And much to the chagrin of fans who hoped to see the original actor again in his role, almost a decade later, as Keanu reeves (Neo) and Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity). Indeed, Morpheus, initially played by Laurence Fishburne during the first three films Matrix, appears as Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. The actor ofAquaman interpreter captain of the younger Nebuchadnezzar in the new feature film.
InMatrix Resurrections, Thomas Anderson, aka Neo, who was left for dead in the last film (Matrix Revolutions), has become a creator of video games with a peaceful life. He seems to have forgotten, and only his restless dreams bear witness to his past in the Matrix. But if Neo has forgotten his past as the Chosen One, he stays on everyone’s minds. Lana wachowski who is this time alone on the project, plays in this new episode with the idea of “déjà vu”, “citing scenes from the trilogy on screen to better reinterpret them, in a story more centered on the relationship between Neo and Trinity ”, according to AFP.
Laurence Fishburne really absent?
While at the announcement of the return of Matrix on the screens, Lana Wachowski confirmed the presence of Keany Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, Laurence Fishburne declared in August 2020 not to be part of the cast. ”I was not invited. […] I wish them good luck. I hope it’s great ”, he said in Vulture.
But the doubt persists, fueled by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, the new interpreter of Morpheus. “It’s really going to be a different iteration of the character. I play a character who knows the history of the Matrix as well as that of Morpheus. He is on a journey of self-discovery, ”he told Allociné.

Remaining very enigmatic, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II explained that “the spectators will be brought to understand that there are several rules in the Matrix. Age, appearance, and things that we think are real can be manipulated. The Matrix is the place where anything is possible. ”
And last December 10, the actor specified on the set of Tonight show of Jimmy fallon, not to have been “hired to replace Laurence Fishburne”. “When the film comes out, it will make sense, it will be cool, and if not, I was still paid”, quipped the actor.
Matrix and metaverse
For many fans, the saga Matrix is the one that best anticipated the start of the 21st century. “Matrix said a lot about what was going to happen, reality catching up with science fiction with the arrival of 3D, augmented and virtual reality ”, underlines Lloyd Chéry, founder of the podcast It’s more than sci-fi to AFP.
Because indeed, Matrix has been playing from the start with the idea of a parallel world. A concept also taken up in the Marvel universe, and in particular in the new Spider-Man: No Way Home, which also leaves doubt on a return of former emblematic actors of the franchise.
And finally the Matrix matrix, recalls the metaverse. This new technology is an extension of the Internet that brings together different technologies so that a user can experience a world in virtual reality. As in Ready Player One, one of the best examples of metaverse on the big screen, in Matrix, men are alienated by machines, and no longer really live.
It remains to be seen whether in Matrix Resurrections, Neo will take the Red Pill to remember and once again save the world from the grip of the Matrix.
