iOS 16: the list of iPhone that could be compatible – Frandroid

Compared to iOS 15, Apple would have this time decided to abandon three iPhone models when launching iOS 16 at the end of 2022. On the iPad side, four models would no longer be supported by the iPadOS 16 version either.

OfiOS 13 at iOS 15, Apple kept the same list ofiPhone compatible with its new operating systems.

This results in exceptional software monitoring for models like the iPhone 6s, released in 2015, which therefore benefits from 6 years of update. No manufacturer posts such a good score. But this blessed time for owners of old iPhones seems to be coming to an end.

Three less iPhones on iOS 16

Indeed, according to the site iPhoneSoft, who quotes “A developer friend at Apple”, the list of iPhone compatible with iOS 16, which is expected to be revealed in June during WWDC 2022 and rolled out in the fall, would lose three models. The specialized site had already distinguished itself by announcing in advance the list of iPhone compatible with iOS 14, without being mistaken. If we have to be careful, we can therefore think that this is a rather serious leak.

IPhone 6, iPhone 6s Plus, and iPhone SE 2016 (first generation) would no longer be supported. The three models have in fact in common that they are equipped with an A9 chip which is no longer suited to the improvements added by Apple. IPhone compatible with iOS 16 would therefore range from iPhone 7 and 7 Plus (which included the A10 chip, Apple’s first quad-core SoC) to iPhone 14.

iPadOS 16 no slouch

On the iPad side, we would follow the same logic. Models equipped with an A8X or A9X chip would no longer be supported by iPadOS 16.

Clearly, four models would not benefit from this major update: the iPad mini 4 (which even had an A8 chip like the iPhone 6), the iPad Air 2, the iPad 5 and the very first iPad Pro ( 9.7 and 12.9 inches).

And obviously the new iPads announced in 2022 will be added to the list.
