The census was a challenge for the Statistical Office (SO) of the Slovak Republic. “We have also become aware of the many possibilities of information technology. The electronic census has made the country’s population much easier. We will publish more results at the beginning of next year.” said Alexander Ballek, chairman of the SO.

More resources – more accurate information

In addition to population data, the SO also worked with other sources during the census. “Thanks to that, we got more accurate information,” pointed out Ľudmila Ivančíková, Director General of the Social Statistics and Demography Section of the Statistical Office.

Slovakia is getting older

According to her, the results of the census confirmed the trend of an aging population. The share of the population in the pre-productive age (from zero to 14 years) is 16 percent, in the productive age (from 15 to 64 years) 67 percent and the share of the population in the post-productive age (more than 65 years) is 17 percent. “Compared to 2011, the share of the population over the age of 65 has increased significantly. We see it in all regions, the number of them has increased the most in the Trenčín region,” Ivančíková specified.

Most people from abroad are in the Bratislava region

As many as 98.9 percent of the permanent resident have Slovak citizenship. The first results also show that slightly more people live in cities (53.2 percent) than in the countryside (46.8 percent). Most people with other nationalities live permanently in the Bratislava region, the least in the Trenčín region.

The number of educated people with a university is growing

The share of university-educated people in Slovakia has increased. They make up 18.4 percent of the population. However, most residents still have a high school diploma.

“By far the highest share of the population with a university degree (31.7 percent) lives in the Bratislava region,” Ivančíková specified. This region also has the lowest share of the population with basic education (11.6 percent).

According to her, the share of divorced and single people has increased slightly. “In terms of marital status, most people (44.4 percent) are single, 40 percent are married, 8.2 percent are divorced, and seven percent are widows or widowers.” named Ivančíková.

A total of 1,234,592 houses were counted in the census. Almost a third were built between 1961 and 1980. “9.9 percent of houses have been built in the last ten years, most of them in the Bratislava region,” she said.

According to SODB, the period with the highest number of home renovations was 2010 to 2015, when 23.2 percent of homes underwent reconstruction. The most common was the renovation of windows or insulation of the house. “However, we still have almost 39 percent of houses in Slovakia that have not been renovated at all,” Ivančíková stated.

The apartments are more equipped

The equipment of flats has also improved. In Slovakia, flats in family houses predominate, there are up to 49.2 percent of them, and in apartment houses (45.9 percent). The largest share of dwellings is in the Bratislava region, the lowest in the Trnava region, the census showed.

All statistical data are available on the website www.scitanie.sk. “The results will be made available exclusively electronically,” added Zuzana Podmanická, director of the Department of Population Statistics of the Statistical Office. In January, the SO should publish additional data, including the number of inhabitants reporting to individual churches in Slovakia.

The census began on 15 February. For the first time in its history, it was based on a combination of pre-existing data with data from the population and was fully electronic. The resident counted himself. The electronic self-completion of the form lasted until March 31. The assisted census was from April to the end of October.
