Hopta was a longtime regional deputy of the Prešov region. “We express our sincere condolences to the family, honoring his memory,” wrote the Prešov self-governing region on his Facebook.

“Even at the last council, we felt that we (someone) were missing something there. Mr. Hopta left a huge and unmistakable mark in Humen politics, which we will mention for a long time to come.” wrote members of the brave Humenné parliamentary group on a social network.

Hopta was a member of the National Council of the Slovak Republic in the years 2002 – 2006 for the CPSU. He was also a member of the Committee of the National Council of the Slovak Republic for Human Rights, Nationalities and the Status of Women, a member of the Committee for Education, Culture and the Media, as well as a member of the Committee for Incompatibility of the National Council of the Slovak Republic.

In 2005, he founded the left-wing party Úsvit and became its chairman. He was a long-term member of the Prešov self-governing region (since 2009) and the City Council in Humenné (since 1994).
