US Supreme Court dismisses challenge to Affordable Care Act

(CNN) – The Supreme Court of the United States on Thursday dismissed a challenge to the Affordable Care Act, in a decision that will leave the law intact and save health care for millions of Americans.

The justices rejected a challenge from the Republican-led states and the former Trump administration that urged justices to block the entire bill.

The judges said that the challengers of the 2010 law did not have the legal right to present the case.

Judge Breyer wrote the decision which was 7 to 2 votes. Justices Samuel Alito and Gorsuch disagreed.

They pointed out that there is no harm to opponents by the provisions they are challenging because Congress has reduced the penalty for not buying health insurance to zero.

The ruling means the judges will not rule on the merits of the lawsuit, the third time they have been asked to consider a major challenge to the law. Thus, they will allow the law to stand.

The lawsuit was filed by Republican states that oppose the law and has the support of former President Donald Trump.
