Three ruling generations

Since the founding of North Korea, Kim Irsen has ruled the country for three generations of the Kim family. When Kim Ir-sen died in 1994, his eldest son Kim Jong-il took over the country. Kim Jong-un is the third and youngest son of Kim Jong-il and became the leader of the DPRK after the death of his father in 2011.

During Kim Irsen’s rule, many foreign experts considered Kim Jongju to be the second most powerful representative of the North or even a possible successor to his brother.

Kim Jong-ji held several top positions: he was director of the organizational and advisory department and a member of the politburo of the ruling Korean Labor Party.
