The head of the South African Medical Association, Angelique Coetzee, suspected the existence of a new variant as one of the first doctors in the country. She noticed that patients at her clinic were suffering from symptoms that were different from the original strain and the world’s predominant delta variant. Already in November, she announced that she saw “clinical picture that does not correspond to the delta”. According to her, the most common symptoms of omicron infection include fatigue, mild muscle pain, dry cough and scratching in the throat.
