South Africa: justice cancels the parole of ex-president Jacob Zuma

The South African Constitutional Court has ordered the reincarceration of Jacob Zuma, according to a decision released Wednesday. The former president was released on parole in early September after a medical operation.

The Constitutional Court of South Africa, the highest judicial institution in the country, ordered the reincarceration of ex-President Jacob Zuma on Wednesday (December 15th), revoking his conditional release on medical grounds.

The 79-year-old former head of state is serving a 15-month prison sentence for contempt of justice after refusing to appear before a commission of inquiry on suspicion of corruption under his chairmanship, from 2009 to 2018.

He was jailed in early July last but was granted parole in early September, after being hospitalized for surgery in August.

The Constitutional Court had already rejected in September an appeal by Jacob Zuma, who considered his conviction excessive. The Department of Corrections said it was reviewing the decision and would make a decision in due course.
