“The fifth wave is skyrocketing, with an incidence rate constantly and very rapidly changing for several weeks”, warned ARS Occitanie on Friday December 10, 2021.

Since the end of October, the epidemic has clearly started to rise again and circulation has tended to accelerate since the end of November.

You just have to be a parent to realize this, this new surge in covid affects children more than during the first epidemic peaks.

One indicator: the incidence rate

However, are children more contaminated than adults in Toulouse and Occitanie?

The incidence rate remains the best indicator to assess the circulation of the virus.

This indicator is very clear, whatever the territory: up to the age of 50, the entire population is really affected. Circulation tends to subside after 50 years.

The 30-39 year olds very affected

In Haute-Garonne as in Occitanie, people aged between 30 and 39 are the most likely to report covid (798 cases per 100,000 inhabitants for Haute-Garonne and 850 for Occitania).

Each time, the figures are higher than those recorded in the summer of 2021, which saw the emergence of the Delta variant. Higher figures therefore even though the screening policy is lower than in July and August.

Children highly impacted

Children and adolescents, aged 0 to 19, are then the most affected by the epidemic.

The incidence rate of pre-teens and adolescents (10 to 19 years old) has returned to the levels of this summer whether in Haute-Garonne (576 cases per 100,000 inhabitants) or in Occitania (746). Even though all the lights were still green at the beginning of November.

The circulation of the virus has accelerated the most in children under the age of 10 and is now reaching levels not reached since March 2020.

In Haute-Garonne, the incidence rate of children aged 0 to 9 is 672 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and to 723 for Occitania
