Presidential election in Iran: the conservatives big favorites two days before the election

Some 59 million Iranians are called to go to the polls on June 18 to elect their new president. Iran’s presidential candidate validation system, run by the Council of Guardians of the Constitution, has largely favored the conservatives by retaining just seven candidates, including five ultra-conservative, out of nearly 600 candidates.

This Council is close to the Supreme Guide, Ali Khamenei, who appoints six of the twelve members.

The special envoys of France 24 went to meet the supporters of the ultra-conservative Ebrahim Raïssi, given the favorite of the ballot, during one of his meetings.

Meeting also with Mohsen Rafsanjani, the son of the moderate ex-president Ali Akbar Hachemi Rafsanjani, excluded from the poll like most reformist candidates. However, he refuses to follow calls to boycott the ballot.
