The price of foldable smartphones could fall in 2022 – Frandroid

According to a leaker, the price of foldable smartphones should become more affordable in 2022 … to the point of reaching that of traditional smartphones.

For many years, the foldable smartphone will have been just a dream. Mentioned by brands in the early 2010s, it was not until 2018 to see the appearance of the first smartphone with a folding screen on the market. Almost four years later, it may finally quit its status as a differentiator and become more popular.

A fall in prices to come?

According to the Digital Chat Station leaker, 2022 would be a pivotal year (haha) for the folding smartphone. Today, Samsung reigns supreme with two formats: the Galaxy Z Flip, small and relatively affordable, and the Galaxy Z Fold, really impressive, but also very expensive with a starting price of 1800 euros for the Galaxy z fold 3. The leaker nevertheless asserts that this price should fall.

On his Weibo, he says smartphones that can fold horizontally will reach as early as next year “the price of a normal high-end smartphone“. Remember, however, that a “normal high-end smartphone” like a Galaxy S21 Ultra or one iPhone 13 Pro today costs between 1000 and 1500 euros all the same.

Finally some competition on the foldable smartphone

It must be said that if Samsung does not have any competition for the moment, the cards could quickly be reshuffled. Several brands should follow in the footsteps of the Korean manufacturer and in turn offer their foldable smartphone in 2022. We are thinking in particular of Oppo, whose Find N was recently leaked, but also to Xiaomi which already offers the Mi Mix Fold in China below 10,000 yuan (approximately 1,400 euros excluding tax). Others could also create the surprise, like Motorola which did not really perform with sound Razr 2019, yet in the first to come out, or Google from which we expect the Pixel Fold since a long time.

This year, competition and the maturity of the technology should therefore naturally pull market prices down. But wouldn’t that also be a good way to lower the price of ultra premium smartphones?
