This sentence, pronounced by Valérie Pécresse this Saturday, December 11, at the room of the Mutualité de Paris, where she gave the first meeting of her campaign for the presidential election, earned her a slew of outraged reactions. To hear him, in fact, it seemed that Valérie Pécresse placed in Corrèze the Haut-Viennois village of Oradour-sur-Glane, symbol of Nazi barbarism.

Contacted this Sunday, Valérie Pécresse says she regrets “an absurd pataques” and explains that no one knows better than[elle] where Oradour is located: “I have personally been to Oradour-sur-Glane twice. It happens, moreover, that I pass every summer between Meymac, in Corrèze, and Nantes. On the way, I pass through Saint-Junien, a few steps from Oradour. So I know perfectly well that Oradour is located in Haute-Vienne, and not in Corrèze, this department that I have been traveling for 27 years ”.

So why did so many people believe the candidate was mistaken? The fault of the “delivery of speech”, affirms Valérie Pécresse. “This is a part of the speech where I was particularly moved. Perhaps I pronounced this sentence too quickly ”. And to explain that it was necessary to understand:

“I went through the silence of Oradour-sur-Glane, martyr village, [le silence] of my Correze at heart, that of the victorious maquis ”.

The element of “my Corrèze de coeur” therefore did not relate to the “martyr village”, but to “silence”. “I fully understand that the pronouncement, under the influence of emotion, could have given rise to confusion,” indicates Valérie Pécresse. I called the mayor of Oradour-sur-Glane to explain it to him. “
