Political life

First a UNEF activist, Jacques Auxiette began his political career in La Roche-sur-Yon in 1970 when he joined the PSU. In 1973, he joined the PS and became secretary of the La Roche-sur-Yon section. In 1986, he became the first federal secretary for the Vendée, a position he held until 1990. In 1977, he was elected mayor of La Roche-sur-Yon, at the head of a list of the united left. From 1979 to 1985, he was general councilor of the northern canton of La Roche-sur-Yon.

He sat on the Pays de la Loire regional council from 1979, and retained his mandate as mayor until 2004, when he won the presidency of the region against François Fillon. Christelle Morancais holds the position, elected president of the Pays de la Loire regional council since 2017, following Bruno Retailleau.

If the socialist militants lose a friend, the Vendéennes and the Vendéens see leaving a prominent figure in our department. His tenures at the head of the capital of the Vendée and the Region have indeed been marked by essential achievements which have contributed to the attractiveness of our region where life is good. Attentive to the needs of the population, cultivating close proximity at all times and convinced of the importance of closely involving citizens in public action carried out by elected officials, Jacques Auxiette will have profoundly changed the way in which political action is conceived. .

Sylviane Bulteau, First Federal Secretary

Jacques Auxiette was also administrator of the ENA (1983-1987).

In October 2015, Jacques Auxiette announced that he did not want to renew his mandate during the regional elections in December.

With the death of Jacques Auxiette, it is a page in the history of the Pays de la Loire, but also of the Vendée, which turns. We fought each other for a long time, sometimes hard. Despite our disagreements, I respected him, because he defended our region when it was threatened with fragmentation. The last time I saw him was at Fontevrault Abbey, which he loved and chaired, just like me. We also had the same conception of politics: action in the service of convictions. He was a man of commitment to his ideas.

Bruno Retailleau, senator of the Vendée.

He passed away yesterday, December 10, 2021.
