Since Friday, December 10, some measures for the vaccinated and outdated have been refined in Slovakia. Shops or some services have opened for this group of people. Although vaccination has been shown to protect people from severe coronavirus and has more benefits than risks, many do not want to be vaccinated at this time. At the same time, it will be a year after the first Slovak received the first dose of the vaccine in our region.

The government has therefore decided to motivate a vulnerable group of people over the age of 60 to be vaccinated with monetary benefits. In addition, however, there is already open talk about compulsory vaccination and the Minister of Health Vladimír Lengvarský (OĽaNO nominee) together with the Minister of Justice Mária Kolíková (SaS Club) were given the task of looking at this topic in detail. They have a deadline of January 10.

The mathematician Richard Kollár is also reacting to the current situation. He also has good news for people after a long time. “Yes, the wave still looks behind the peak. The positivity of PCR tests is already stabilizing with a declining number of tests, which is great news,” he wrote. Subsequently, however, he raises a warning finger. This is because we still do not know what the new omicron variant will bring. According to scientists, it has more than 30 mutations attached to the original spike protein, while the delta had only 9. According to Kollár, it is not clear how deep we will be able to fall from the currently high numbers until the omicron is fully expanded here. “The question today is also what omikron will actually bring. Around it, only information that we don’t know exactly. There will be many infected, but we don’t know what exactly that will mean.” Kollár stated.

The mathematician also looked at why some people do not want to be vaccinated by force. He found out several facts. He was inspired by gambling to analyze the behavior of unvaccinated people and their opinions. According to him, this is a good example of how to understand some theories of antivaxers. As he explained, he is most fascinated by the current situation, as some individuals are trying to find a simple solution to get out of the clutches of the pandemic, even if it is a serious global problem. As he said, many do not trust statistics and, as a mathematician, understand these people.

And that’s why he likened the views and theories of some people to gambling – gamblers work the same way. Once they win the money, they stop believing that gambling is evil, they regularly stab the entire payout into slot machines, but they continue to believe that slot machines are not the bad ones. They are not interested in what the whole world is saying, their personal experience, which was positive at the beginning, is important.
