What should the Series 3 electric sedan be called? Well, that’s the problem.

Because the model called the BMW i3 has nothing to do with the sedan of the classic concept. At one time, fans of the brand did not even know how to stand it, today this electric and, for its time, extremely progressive hatchback is at the end of its journey. Its designation has raised questions since its introduction. It was clear to everyone with two eyes of average diopter from the beginning that it was not an electric series 3, because the i3 is a car with an interior space even smaller than the series 1, just has a higher body construction and therefore more space above the passengers’ heads.

However, at least in China, the problem of labeling electric and traditional versions seems to have been solved. The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has again managed to publish documentation for the new BMW model again, surprisingly and prematurely. Apparently, the ministry doesn’t make a big deal with “official presentations of new manufacturers’ models”, just as they didn’t make a big head out of copying and stealing technologies and designs from domestic brands from established brands just a few years ago.

So you’re looking at the BMW i3 35L. It is the Chinese electric version of the BMW 3 Series. Its curb weight is just over two tons, it has an extended wheelbase compared to our version 3 version and it has 250 kW of power thanks to the rear electric motor.

The electrification of the 3 series started a long time ago, but this model does not yet have a purely electric version. But the BMW i4 is already here. The question remains whether BMW will put the nomenclature in order, or it is just a local matter, and the fully electric 3 Series will only become apparent in Europe when the designation no longer makes sense – because everything will be electric. However, this is probably not entirely true, as the electric series 3 is already happily on the road in camouflaged form.

But what would the successor to the ending i3 electric car be called when i3 is this? So what. i2 though. After all, the i3 was a model, so to speak, out of order. The car in the pictures will probably be closer to the facelifted BMW 3 Series than to the electric “i3”, but that’s like predicting the weather at a time of global warming. We won’t find out until it happens.
