For savers, the transition to the new year goes hand in hand with the collection of interest accrued over the months. How much can you expect to receive with your Livret A for 2021?

The amounts saved on a A booklet are remunerated at 0.50% net. The total of the interest accumulated throughout the year is paid during the transition to the new year, which is also the case for other savings accounts (LDDS, Livret Jeune, LEP, etc.). For the more impatient, it is possible to estimate the amount to be collected before seeing it appear on your account statement. How is the Livret A remunerated?

The Livret A is a regulated savings account. In other words: its operation is the same from one banking establishment to another. In addition, the interest rate charged is “net”, that is to say exempt from income tax and social contributions, unlike bank books whose rate is said to be “gross”. This operation is not specific to the Livret A, it is also found for other passbooks such as the LDDS, the LEP or the Livret Jeune (except for the rate of this passbook which may vary from one bank to another) .

Since January 1, 2021, the interest rate of the Livret A has remained the same: 0.50% net. A historically low level which was reached on February 1, 2020, replacing the 0.75% net granted. With identical remuneration throughout the year 2021, the calculation of the interest to be received is greatly simplified: a saver who has left 1,000 euros throughout the year on his Livret A will receive 5 euros in interest, 10 euros for 2,000 euros in savings, 25 euros for 5,000 euros and 50 euros for 10,000 euros.

The fortnightly rule is causing trouble

If you never touch the money capitalized on your Livret A, calculating interest is easy. On the other hand, if you remove and / or feed it frequently, the stain becomes more complicated. Indeed, the Livret A is subject to the fortnight rule. For example, a payment made after the 1st day of the month is not taken into account in calculating interest until the 16th day. If this same payment is made after the 15th day of the month, then it is necessary to wait until the 1st day of the following month for the sum to start producing interest. The influence of this rule is also important during withdrawals, since a sum withdrawn on the 28th, for example, will not generate interest from the 16th day of the month. In all cases, it is preferable to draw from your Livret A to fund your current account during financial difficulties. Indeed, the loss of interest will always remain much lower than the cost of the charges levied during a payment incident (premiums, intervention commissions, rejection costs, etc.).

It is almost impossible to know with precision the amount to be collected at the end of the year if you draw and often feed your Livret A. Only an estimate can be made based on the average amount held on this investment. According to the latest data provided by the Caisse des Dépôts et des Consignations as well as by the Banque de France, each French person who holds a Livret A should receive an average of 31 euros in interest for the year 2021. Data which, in the reality is the big difference, since 36% of Livrets A are credited with less than 150 euros, and only 7% have reached the ceiling of 22,950 euros.
