Used cars are still missing in Central Europe. In November alone, 41,000 cars in the V4 countries fell. Obviously, this also affects price developments.

The chip crisis has reduced the availability of new cars. Many brands have virtually nothing to sell. The waiting periods have been extended to one year. Customers went from showrooms to the used car market. But even here they have little reason to rejoice. There are desperately few cars and they are becoming more expensive. This is also because many have decided to keep their cars longer than they originally planned in the current situation.

Although the “ticket” market seemed to pick up a bit after many months in October, November cooled this optimism again. The number of used used cars decreased in all markets in the V4 countries, from 430,536 in October to 388,830 in November. In Slovakia there was a decrease of more than 6,000, in Poland the offer decreased by more than 22,000, in the Czech Republic almost 10,000 and in Hungary by less than 3,500 vehicles.

Compared to November 2020, less than 15,000 cars are missing in the V4 countries, but compared to the previous year, 2019, almost 144,000 vehicles were lost on offer! The situation on the secondary market is not enough to saturate even the record number of imported used cars from abroad. This emerges from a market analysis of Aures Holdings, the largest used car dealer in Central Europe.

“We have not experienced such dynamic changes in the market since the economic crisis in 2008. The number of used cars is constantly declining, so the offer is smaller and prices are constantly rising,” says Petr Vaněček, operations director of Aures Holdings. The increase in average prices is evident in all V4 countries.

In Slovakia the price increased by 890 euros per year, to the current 6,990 euros, in the Czech Republic by 30,000 crowns, to 178,000 crowns (approx. 7,000 euros), in Poland the price increased by 3,500 zlotys year-on-year, to the current 22,500 zlotys (approx. 4,900 euros) and in Hungary customers have to pay 450,000 forints, because the price of used cars is currently 2,149,000 forints (approx. 5,900 euros).

The Škoda Octavia (2,994 and 7,666, respectively) in Poland and the Opel Astra (5,989 and 1,699, respectively) remain the most frequently offered vehicles in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. The median age of the car was highest in November for vehicles advertised in Poland (12.4 years), followed by Hungary (11.8 years), the Czech Republic (10.2 years) and the youngest in Slovakia (10 years). The speedometer is again the highest in Poland (median 183,000 km), the least used are vehicles in the Czech Republic (150,588 km).
