Georgia store mask dispute leaves 1 dead, 2 injured

(CNN) – A dispute over the use of the face mask A shooting at a grocery store on Monday left an employee dead and two people injured, including an officer, according to DeKalb County Sheriff Melody Maddox.

The suspect entered the Big Bear Supermarket at South DeKalb Mall in Decatur, in the Atlanta metropolitan area, where there was an argument with the cashier about a mask. Maddox gave few details about the argument, but said it was for a mask.

The suspect then shot the employee and she died of her injuries, Maddox said at a news conference Monday.

A reserve agent working security at the store shot the suspect, who responded to the fire. Both were injured and taken to local hospitals.

Maddox said the reserve agent was a 30-year veteran of the force before retiring and joining the reserve unit. He is in a stable condition.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and DeKalb County Police are investigating the incident.
