The Mastiffs were hungry for Wolves, the LOSC in 8th! – Debrief and NOTES of the players (Wolfsbourg 1-3 Lille) – Maxifoot

Lille is qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions League! Serious and diligent, LOSC won Wolfsburg (3-1) on Wednesday and finished at the top of its group.

Yilmaz opened the scoring for Lille (0-1, 11th)

Fifteen years later, Lille will go back to the knockout stages of the Champions League! On the occasion of the 6th day of the group stage, the LOSC finished the work by winning this Wednesday on the lawn of Wolfsburg (3-1). A success that allows the northern club to secure first place in group G.

Yilmaz places Lille in front

Lille entered this meeting perfectly by opening the scoring very early. With an excellent Ikon the baguette! Following a quick recovery from Grbic, the French international made speak his speed on a sharp acceleration to go up the field and serve Yilmaz in the box (0-1, 11th). While a draw was enough for LOSC to qualify tonight, the start of the match was ideal for Jocelyn Gourvennec’s men.

Behind, the Wolves took control of the game and sent some shivers through the Lille area on the heads of Weghorst and Lacroix in particular. But the Mastiffs grazed their advantage and were serious defensively. On the other hand, there was no longer any northerner opportunity to put their teeth in, apart from a free kick from Yilmaz, since the opening scoring. But Lille had done the hardest by leading the score when returning to the locker room.

LOSC drives the point home

At the start of the second period, Ikon was still making his talent speak on a small number between two opponents before arming a strike rejected by Casteels. Lille was not far from the break … And it’s a shame for the LOSC since the rest of the meeting was not reassuring for the reigning French champions. The ball went from goal to goal and the Northerners could not calm things down to manage their advantage a little more calmly on the scoreboard.

But as often this season, Lille could count on David. Quite discreet offensively for more than an hour, the Canadian international made the break on his first shot of the meeting (0-2, 72nd)! Relieved after this second goal, the Lille were going to drive the point home on a realization of Gomes, perfectly served by the untenable Ikon (0-3, 78th). End of the suspense. The reduction of the gap by Steffen at the end of the match did not change anything (1-3, 89th). Lille could raise their arms and savor the final whistle. We will see LOSC in the Champions League again in February!

The score of the match: 6/10

A very pleasant match despite an atmosphere totally absent in a silent Volkswagen Arena due to the maximum capacity of 6,000 spectators fixed following the resurgence of cases of Covid-19 in Germany. The first period was especially marked by the first Lille goal, and it was not until the second act to see the game get carried away.

The goals :

– Grbic raises quickly right side towards Celik who serves Ikon. The Lille right midfielder goes up the field and serves Yilmaz in the box. The Turk takes over from the left to score (0-1, 11th).

– Served by Gomes entering the area, David takes the ball and beats the goalkeeper on the left (0-2, 72nd).

– Dcal by Onana in the axis, Ikon serves Gomes in the surface. The Lille attacking midfielder scores with a right-footed shot (0-3, 78th).

– Following a ball lost by Sanches in front of its surface, Steffen placed a cross shot from the left to beat Grbic (1-3, 89th).

Player NOTES

Maxifoot has awarded a score (out of 10) comments on each player.

Man of the match: Jonathan Ikon (8/10)

The number 10 in Lille was untenable this evening! His technique and his acceleration hurt the Germans, as on his race which allowed him to offer Yilmaz a decisive pass on the Lille opener. In the second half, Casteels prevented him from scoring two goals, but he gave Gomes another decisive pass on LOSC’s third achievement. No goal, but shovel differences! Replace the 83rd by Yusuf Yazici (not rated).

WOLFSBURG :

Koen Casteels (4): the Wolfsburg goalkeeper stood out on two Ikon attempts, but he cracked three times on strikes from Lille attackers.

Maxence Lacroix (4): a difficult match for the French defender. Draft in the recovery and exceeded by the speed of Lille, he spent a complicated evening.

Josuha Guilavogui (5): presented defensively, the former Stphanois did not deserve by recovering many balloons. Replace the 75th by Felix Nmecha (not rated).

Sebastiaan Bornauw (3): a dirty night for the central defender. He suffered enormously on the Ikon and David races.

Kevin Mbabu (5): the right side did not spend his time trying to make himself available in his lane. With Gudmundsson and Reinildo on their backs, the task was not easy. Replace the 63rd by Ridle Baku (not not).

Aster Vranckx (6): fair in his choices, the Belgian midfielder made an interesting match. The former Mechelen player was one of the few parts of his team to make a difference in the game.

Maximilian Arnold (4): the midfield of VfL was dominated in the midfield. He saved his performance a little with a decisive pass late in the game.

Paulo Otvio (4): the left side tried a few climbs early in the match, but he was quickly cooled by Ikon’s acceleration. He had a terrible time containing LOSC n10. Replace the 63rd by Jrme Roussillon (not rated).

Gian-Luca Waldschmidt (3): a very discreet match. We didn’t see much of Wolfsburg n7 in this part. Replaced by Renato Steffen (not rated), who saves the honor for his team by scoring a goal late in the game.

Yannick Gerhardt (4): the German weighed very little in the game of his team in the first period. His coach preferred to take him out during the break. Replace the 46th by Dodi Lukebakio (5), which brought a little more speed.

Wout Weghorst (5): the center forward from Wolfsburg was especially distinguished in the air game. His meter 97 allowed him to gain the upper hand in the air several times to bring danger over heads in the Lille area.

Lille :

Ivo Grbic (5.5): a fairly calm evening for the Lille goalkeeper. He has only one stop to make in the first period on a head of Weghorst. He can’t do much on Steffen’s goal late in the game.

Mehmet elik (5): a relatively average match for the Lille side. He was not always perfect in his right lane and he had a lot of waste in his transmissions (66% successful passes). Replace the 83rd by Tiago Djalo (not rated).

Jos Fonte (6): serious, the image of his team, the Lille captain led his boat behind to repel danger and win his aerial duels.

Sven Botman (6.5): a very solid match for the central defender of LOSC. Always well placed, the Dutchman did the cleaning in his area. His return is really good for the Mastiffs.

Reinildo (7): the Wolves insisted on his side, it was probably not a good idea … The Lille left side played a very solid game defensively, winning most of his duels. In the first period, he frees a head from Weghorst in front of his line.

Benjamin Andr (7): as often, the Lille defensive midfielder responds to important meetings. He was still valuable in the midfield to scratch balls and relieve his defense.

Gabriel Gudmundsson (5): holder at the position of left midfielder, the Sudois made a decent match. He worked a lot in the first period to annoy Mbabu on his climbs. By dint of increasing the number of races, he suffered physically after the break. Replace the 69th with Angel Gomes (not rated), who delivers a decisive pass to David and scores Lille’s third goal. A nice entry!

Jonathan David (6): the Lille striker has long been content to work for his team by hampering the German recovery with his pressing. He is rewarded for his efforts with a goal on his first shot which allows LOSC to make the break in this game.

Renato Sanches (4): the LOSC midfielder was not having a great night. He had an unusual waste in his game and lost the ball on the German goal late in the game. A little Renato Sanches.

Jonathan Ikon (8): read the comment above.

Burak Yilmaz (6.5): the Lille striker put his team on the right track after just 11 minutes: the Turkish did not waste his first opportunity by opening the scoring on Ikon’s perfect serve. He was less inspired on a new pass from Ikon in the second half, his shot clearly missing the target. Replace the 74th with Amadou Onana (not rated).
