Parliament’s Deputy Speaker Milan Laurenčík (SaS) opened the 51st session to discuss the proposed bill on the benefits of vaccinated pensioners. The Minister of Finance Igor Matovič justifies the proposal in the second reading. He begins by saying that he is satisfied with the final compromise. However, he regrets that they were also unable to provide sufficient and additional financial assistance to other businesses and services. The OĽANO leader thinks that commentators and other analysts who criticize this proposal in the context of motivation are wrong, and this measure will really help to increase vaccination.

Sudden change from vouchers to 300 euros in a cache

The € 500 vouchers as an incentive for seniors to be vaccinated are to be changed to € 300 in a cache and should be paid out for the third dose of COVID-19 vaccine. This money could be used by seniors for any purpose. They could also receive an incentive when they are vaccinated with the first dose. Finance Minister Igor Matovic suddenly informed about it on Tuesday.

He is convinced that the newly vaccinated pensioners will pull Slovakia out of the clutches of the pandemic. “Only these people can pull us out of this difficult crisis,” Deputy Prime Minister Matovič said yesterday. He emphasizes that he also sees this step as mutual help.

The amendment is in the second reading

Yesterday, MEPs moved the entire amendment on pensioners’ remuneration to second reading. However, as there have been sudden changes in these rewards in the middle of the day (change of cash vouchers), several amendments are likely to be tabled. There were 87 deputies for the proposal yesterday.

The negotiations were tiring

To present the unexpected changes in the case of vouchers for pensioners, Prime Minister Eduard Heger admitted that the negotiations took a long time, but at the end of the day they allegedly testify to the cohesion of the coalition. However, Matovič announces that the motivations for vaccination will probably be the final end after all this. “This is the latest attempt to get the most vulnerable people to be vaccinated with positive motivation,” Matovic said about financial rewards.

Remišová also said in the spirit that this is the last attempt to motivate people, then it will probably be necessary to introduce compulsory vaccination. She even called on President Zuzana Čaputová to support the mandatory coronavirus vaccination.
