“Today is a historic day, our country has approved same-sex marriages, in terms of justice and equality it is another step forward.” said the local Minister of Social Affairs, Karla Rubilarová, after the vote.

The legislators’ vote was thus the culmination of a process that began in 2017, when the first draft of this law was presented, which was backed by the then President Michelle Bachelet. Chile will join more than 20 countries in the world where gay marriage is legal – including Latin American countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica and Uruguay.

According to Reuters, same-sex civil unions have been allowed in Chile since 2015, but gay couples do not have the same rights as after marriage – for example, they did not have the right to adopt.
