Austrian doctor who mistakenly amputated the wrong leg of a patient († 82), recognized the punishment – TVNOVINY.sk

A doctor (43) from a hospital in Freistadt, Austria, who she mistakenly amputated an 82-year-old patient’s leg, must pay a fine of EUR 2 700. A court in Linz has ruled on this, which also awarded the man’s widow compensation of 5,000 euros, the portal informs BBC.

In May of this year, the patient († 82) was hospitalized after an illness after which he had both legs injured, and his left limb required amputation of the thigh area. The tragic mistake came to light two days later when the wound was tied. The crushed man was told he would lose his other leg. However, he did not live to see the end of the lawsuit.

The hospital immediately apologized for the mistake and called the incident the result of several unfortunate circumstances. The doctor claimed in court that there was a misunderstanding when handing over the instructions. When asked why she had marked the wrong leg, she could not explain her mistake.

The convicted doctor is currently working at another clinic, and half of her fine has already been forgiven.
