The first tropical storm of the season could make landfall in the United States next week

(CNN) – Hurricane season started less than two weeks ago and there is already something that is drawing the attention of the National Hurricane Center.
An area of ​​low pressure in the Gulf of Mexico, which is currently disorganized, should be especially watched along the Gulf Coast until the end of next week.

Possible impact in the United States

“There may be a slow development of this system as it moves northwest and north,” said the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Right now, there is only a 20% chance that it will become a system over the next 5 days, according to the NHC, and a 30% chance of development over the next 7 days according to other meteorologists.

European and US forecasting computer models indicate that this potential storm is developing very slowly.

But watch out, especially in the middle of the week on the Gulf Coast, as both models point to the system heading north.

If this forecast holds, this would potentially make it the first storm of the 2021 season to hit the United States.

“The location of this potential low pressure is exactly in line with what we consider to be the typical June formation area,” says CNN meteorologist Chad Myers.

The storm could reach a more favorable environment for its development next week.

Climate Prediction Center (CPC) Forecasts Another Above-Average Hurricane Season

CPC predicts another intense year in the Atlantic Basin. The forecast is that there will be between 13 and 20 named storms, between 6 and 10 hurricanes and between 3 and 5 hurricanes of category 3 or higher.

In an average season there are 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes.

The 2020 season was unprecedented. There were 30 named storms and 11 of them made landfall in the United States. Fourteen were hurricanes and 7 became major hurricanes.

Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30.
