BRATISLAVA – Lionel Messi’s record seventh triumph in the prestigious Golden Ball poll immediately provoked numerous discussions among the football public as to whether he was really deserved this time and whether his stellar past and also the move to Paris were more important. The biggest experts were Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich last season’s top favorite, who ended up with a 33-point loss in second place.

The second Lewandowski received at least the award for the best striker, which was presented for the first time this year. Well-known sports commentator Marcel Merčiak and football expert Ladislav Borbély also commented for RTVS on the surprising win of Messi’s record trophy.

“I think it’s one of the most controversial decisions in the history of this competition. He’s a giant who didn’t deserve this seventh Golden Ball.” Merčiak stated critically and Borbély agreed with his opinion.

“Even journalists are just people and subject to that addictive nostalgia. They just chose Messi out of habit. He also plays a certain policy in these evaluations. The French probably seemed interested in having someone from their big club there,” Borbély bumped into Messi’s transfer to Paris, where he took over the prestigious trophy from former teammate Luis Suárez.
